10 Must-Do ChildProofing Tasks for the Nursery

10 Must-Do ChildProofing Tasks for the Nursery

Whether we’re a parent or a grandparent, we all want our homes to be a safe heaven for our children or grandchildren. And the most important room to childproof is without a doubt the bedroom, where they will sleep and consequently spend a lot of time unsupervised.

From 0 to 2 years of age, an adult really must have eyes in the back of their head to maintain a careful watch over a little one! Some of the suggestions in this article will seem obvious … but there might be a few tips that you had not considered!

1— Examine the Mobile

Babies put everything in their mouths, and small pieces can be fatal. Most of the mobiles we hang over cribs are safe, although some people would say never to suspend anything over a small child’s bed. Homemade mobiles (DIY) often pose more of a risk. Make sure they have been solidly constructed!

2— Keep Curtains Away from Heating Sources

Newly built homes are equipped with radiators that automatically shut down when an object, such as long drapes, obstructs airflow. If the radiators in the baby’s room do not have this function, it may be better to opt for blinds or short curtains. This is essential fire prevention, as overheated fabric can ignite.

3— Keep Things Out of Reach of Those Tiny Hands

Once a baby has grabbed a hold of something, they can hang on to it with amazing strength. When alone in bed, they should not be able to pick up objects and pass them through the crib’s bars. The mobile should also be far out of reach.

4— Secure the Furniture

By pulling drawers open and trying to climb this “staircase,” toddlers can cause the dresser (or other types of furniture) to topple over. Very dangerous! Most furnishings come with anchoring kits to secure them to the walls of our homes. This becomes all the more important to do when you have children, even if no one likes drilling holes into walls!

5— “Cut” Corners

When your baby begins to crawl around on all fours, some items of furniture may become problematic because of their sharp corners. To reduce the risk of injury, simply buy protective covers that will round out all right angles.

6— Remove Large Crib Accessories

Infants do not yet have the reflects to turn their heads if their breathing is obstructed by a stuffed toy, pillow or blanket. An empty bed may be less aesthetically pleasing, but it certainly is safer! If you do want to decorate the crib, stick to a stylish skirt.

7— Cover the Electrical Outlets

Today, the safety of electrical outlets in recently built homes is generally not an issue. Modern outlets have been designed to keep fingers out or to make it very difficult to plug in an electrical device. However, if you live in an older residence, you must buy plastic guards or covers.

8— Cut the Cords

Most blinds work with pull cords or chains. On some models, these are so long that they are a strangulation hazard for children. Instead, install cordless blinds or at least make sure the cord is hidden and out of reach of the little one.

9— Buy a Fall-Proof Changing Table

Changing tables are usually equipped with a safety strap that keeps the child from rolling off. Others have high ledges that prevent falls. A simple, thin mattress placed on a dresser is not recommended.

10— Block Access to the Windows

What kind of windows do you have in the nursery? A curious toddler will be tempted to sneak up to observe what is going on outside. Modern windows are often wide and have easy-to-access seats. It is best to block the area off for now.

Your peace of mind will be assured once every task on this nursery safety checklist has been completed. And don’t forget to childproof the other rooms of the house!
